Palmyra on the Erie December 2005
Vicky Daly
Years ago I considered and rejected the possibility of taking flying lessons. My head and priorities were elsewhere. Flying, as a passenger, I saw Eastview Mall from the air and realized I was much more interested in its shops and their contents than the view of the complex from the air. Things look different from that perspective. On that same adventure, however, I saw another aerial view that stayed with me - Palmyra from the air looks like the village under the Christmas tree, even in the summer. And this isn’t summer. The village is dressed for the holidays - wreaths and lights and trees adorn the streets of our Victorian village. The holiday carousel is in place in the Village Park bandstand. Shop windows are aglow with holiday treasures for young and old.
Palmyra ushers in the holiday season with Canaltown Candlelight Christmas, Friday - Sunday, December 2 -4. Candlelight Eve, Friday evening, will see a Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6:00 PM in the Village Park. Traditional music and the interior lights of the five downtown churches, showing off their beautiful windows, will add to the event. (The adjacent churches are all visible from the park.)Dinner downtown and shopping are suggested as logical next steps. Luminarias will line Main Street and shops remain open until 9:00 that evening.
Saturday morning is Holiday Open House featuring Breakfast with Santa at Palmyra Elementary School, Canandaigua Street (Route 21), 8:30 - 11:30. Directions for a Treasure Hunt through Main Street stores will be provided at the breakfast. Complimentary horse drawn wagon rides will take visitors through the Village to the Port of Palmyra and the museum district. Riders can leave or board the wagon at stops along the way to facilitate the Treasure Hunt.
Sunday, December 4th, is a time for Music and Museums. The four museums of Historic Palmyra will be open for viewing. Knowledgeable guides will share stories of Palmyra’s past and the Erie Canal. At 4:00 PM, join us for the Annual Advent Chorale Concert at Western Presbyterian Church, at the intersection of Routes 21 and 31, our Four Corners. This yearly event brings together eight area choirs to sing the traditional music of the holiday season. The concert is free, but a free will offering to benefit the local Good Neighbor Fund will be accepted. A reception follows in the church’s Fellowship Hall. There is no better way to close Canaltown Candlelight Christmas nor to put one in a holiday mood.
